About our Arts Open House and Ke-ola Rehab Fundraiser

Nick, Saving dogs like Ke-ola Everyday
Sadly over 1.2 million dogs are "put to sleep" in US shelters every year. The breeds or dog types that suffer the greatest casualties are Pit Bulls, Chihuahuas and their mixes. Shows like The Dog Whisperer, Shelter Dogs, Lucky Dog and others have shown the general public that shelter dogs make great family additions. They've let us see how even the most neglected and abused dogs can learn to trust again and find balance and love. We agree with Nick Martinez and have faith he'll be able to help Ke-ola an ex-shelter dog find his trust and heal his heart.

About Ke-ola: "Ke-ola is a pit bull mix and had a very difficult life before we fostered him and eventually adopted him. He was found on the streets of Carson injured, hurt and very sick. It took us 6 months before Ke-ola was cleared from quarantine and almost a year before he had regained his health. Here’s a link with info about Ke-ola’s rescue and journey to health One Year Anniversarry of Ke-ola...Life. As he became healthier his energy and intensity also became stronger. We have consulted with several dog trainers that specialize in rehabilitating abused dogs and all have concluded that he is a good dog but is in need of specialized training and rehabilitation with a balanced dog pack and intensive training by an expert." ~Ke-ola's family. You can visit our event for more information about his rehabilitation: Arts Open House and Ke-ola Rehab Fundraiser

Arleen Hurtado Artist Highlight
Arleen Hurtado is one of our favorite artists. Her live performances are charged with passion and precision. When she dances she brings forth the strength and graces of her Iberian ancestors. She transports her audiences to another place and time. Arleen’s flamenco is the embodiment of the powerful force of nature that is the feminine. She uses her body to tell the age-old stories of distant lands, of battles won and lost, of heartbreak, of triumph and of culture. Even in her subtle hand movements she brings intention and expression. Her passionate interpretation of traditional flamenco has brought me to tears on more than one occasion. While Arleen’s technical ability is superb, it’s her passion that distinguishes her art. “Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion.” Martha Graham

Jon Luce Artist Highlight
Jon Luce has an unconventional spirit and it translates into his art. His art is a dichotomy. While his work is always refined and aesthetically beautiful he enjoys challenging us with shocking or unexpected subject matter. He asks us through his work to look past convention, to push past our comfort zones and to explore the truth that only our “shadow selves” can provide. When he is not drawing and tattooing ideas for other people, he spends his time creating his own weird and twisted art. “I have a strange view of things sometimes and grew up with strange influences such as H.R. Giger and Clive Barker and movies like Hellraiser and Nightmare on Elm Street. I am slightly morbid and dark sometimes, like my suicidal veggie line of paintings, but also love to see beauty in all things, not just what is typical or popular.” JL

Jon’s perspective of himself being an artist was much the same as most of us. Growing up he always loved the arts and enjoyed being creative but never thought of himself as an artist. It took meeting his muse and soul mate as an adult to help him awaken the slumbering artist that had always been inside of him.

He was born and raised in Southern California. Jon’s family was always supportive of any artistic endeavors he had as a kid. He played several instruments, switching almost every year to a new one and yet his family never complained. He started where most kids do - loving cartoons, video games and comics. His favorites were Garfield comic strips and superhero comics like Spiderman, X-Men and Spawn.

At an early age Jon was able to see art that inspired him in things that most people considered kid’s stuff. He appreciated the great art that he found in unexpected places. Artists like Todd McFarlane, Jim Lee, Frank Miller, Stephen Platt and Simon Bisley began to fill his comic book bins solely for the art.

Jon was equally inspired when he found a new type of cartoon, Anime and most importantly, 'Akira'. He says, ‘Akira’ was the anime that changed my life. To see the level of artistic talent, the lifelike characters, the shadows and movement. I was shown more about art than I could fully appreciate at that age, I didn't realize what possibilities could be yet”.

He dabbled with art classes in high school, but took them no more seriously than his guitar classes. They were like hobbies to him at the time, not really believing he could do anything with either of them. He tried starting bands with friends and wrote comic books in garages, but never got anything really going.

He 'grew up' as most people do and got a job at the end of high school, moving through different careers and positions of all types. He worked fast food, escrow, courier, waiter, security, telemarketing, video game tester, database manager, theft deterrent, etc. All the while he would doodle or draw funny pictures for friends and family, still not considering that he could be an artist. During this time he met his wife and soul mate Denise. Jon says, “If not for meeting someone like her and being all I can be for her, I may have never tried to be an artist. I married my perfect bride on Halloween, also one of our favorite holidays, as again we don’t always find the typical as inviting as others may.”

His friends encouraged him to do tattoos. He had loved some of the evolving artists like Paul Booth and Carl Grace, so with his wife's encouragement and his friends connections, fate led him to an apprenticeship. One requirement that his mentor Nate had was that Jon needed to go to school while apprenticing to further develop his art. That experience shifted Jon’s paradigm. He began to see other great artists besides the well-known Picasso, DaVinci, etc. He saw a plethora of art in many forms. He not only got to meet and appreciate the work of old masters previously unknown to him but was equally inspired by some of the students sitting right next to him in class. Jon says from that experience, “The artist was born and I have not looked back since then”. JL

Jon is an eternal student, after graduating apprenticeship, he has continued his learning and schooling and continues to this day. He is a freelance tattoo artist and could not be happier. “I love being able to take a cherished memory or idea and give it to someone forever. Making them feel whole, or healed again after having a bad tattoo experience. Whether the experience be from a bad artist, having to cover the name of an ex, or to help cover a scar.”  JL

Jon is now pushing past his own artistic boundaries and his personal comfort zone by sharing more of his work with the public. “I am trying to do more of my own art and put my work out to others, letting them see some of the beauty I see in things not typically noted as such.” JL

Jon will be showing his art at the Arts Open House and Ke-ola Rehab Fundraiser and has also generously offered to donate an original painting. Thank you Jon!

{DL} Art,Photography & Design Artist Highlight

Denise Luce of {DL} Art Photography & Design brings her creative touch and compassionate eye to everything she does. Her work is a reflection of the depths of her soul, her strength and her unique perspective of life.

Denise was born in Saarlouis, Germany. Growing up in Germany her parents always encouraged her creative endeavors, from drawing and painting to fantasy make-up, sculpting, and different types of mixed media projects. Denise’s family had a tremendous impact in her artistic development and in her appreciation for different art forms, mediums and disciplines. Baking is one of the creative art forms she has shared with her mother and grandmother ever since she was old enough to bake, which later turned into one of Denise’s passions…creative cake decorating.

She moved to the United States when she was 25 and married the love of her life. Both she and her husband are artists. They share a love of the arts and are each other’s greatest supporters. Denise is a multifaceted artist with a wide scope including photography, graphic design, costume design, cake art, and developing company logos and branding.

Denise’s passion for photography was born because of her love of the feminine form. She is an advocate for the beauty found in all women. She feels a commitment to helping women of all ages, shapes, colors, and sizes see their beauty by using her photography knowledge and skills. Denise shares, “I very strongly believe that everyone should have photos of themselves that they love. Too many of us, especially women, agonize too often over how bad/fat/ugly we look in photos. I could go on and on about this, but what I've found is: There is beauty in everyone and everything. Beautiful light, the right angle etc will show YOU what your family, friends see in you every day, but you have a hard time seeing. Celebrating femininity is very close to my heart, in all its shapes, sizes, styles, etc. from portraits, pin-up, boudoir to maternity sessions and more”.

She also loves Photoshop and it's creative possibilities. Denise enjoys using its editing capabilities to create photographs that take us to magical kingdoms, have us fleeing for our lives from Godzilla or turn us into our Klingon doppelganger. She’s also avid with more traditional applications like restoring family photos, touching up portraits and enhancing/balancing color.

Denise draws inspiration for her art from a variety of places like nature, fantasy and the unconventional. She is equally as inspired in a field of flowers as she is in old graveyards...maybe it's the Gemini in her or maybe she can see beauty everywhere.

Her newest artistic and professional ventures have taken her more heavily into design both graphic and organizational. She works with organizations, companies and individuals to not only create their Logos but to help them with branding needs (business cards, t-shirts, banners, stickers etc.) and help guide their public media campaigns. One of her more recent satisfied clients was Crack Pies LA

Denise looks forward to embracing her creativity in many more forms and will be  exploring new outlets for it ... like painting, or creating a variety of props/costumes to use in her shoots, like headdresses, venetian masks, fans, dresses etc.

Nick Martinez Saving Dog's Like Ke-ola Everyday

Murphy & Nick
Nick Martinez is a dog behaviorist that is wise beyond his years with an innate understanding that transcends species. He has a natural ability to understand and communicate with all types of dogs. After adopting his own personal dog Murphy and working with him one-on-one he knew he could help other people better understand their dogs as well. He is calm-assertive, fearless, strong minded and optimistic. These traits play a huge roll in keeping dogs calm, balanced and helps them over come the "issues" they present with.

Nick is compassionate and empathetic with canines as well as humans. He understands the special and powerful bond between dogs and their humans and does all he can to strengthen it through education and understanding. He's an open hearted person and uses this energy to better understand clients and their relationships with their dogs. He helps people discover how their dog sees them and helps them learn how to be better leaders for their beloved dog(s). Nick's motto is, "there's no such thing as impossible, there's always a way to bring balance and healing to any dog"

Nick's philosophy: is bringing a dog back to a balanced and natural state of mind through the understanding of dog psychology and providing assertive yet calm leadership. Many dog "issues" stem from the environment they are given and conditioning by the humans they live with. People are limited in truly understanding the reason for a dog's behavior. Most of us have a misguided idea that we know the way dogs think and feel by projecting our emotions and intellect on their behavior. Frequently our perception is wrong and in reality it's the exact opposite of how dogs operate. People lack the knowledge of who their dog really is from the dogs perspective and see them only through human psychology.

The beauty of dogs is that they live in the moment every single day which makes them react out of instinct vs. intellect. It also makes dogs unconditional in everything they do. Many people don't realize that they communicate or project their emotions of anxiety, fear, depression, guilt, sadness, overexcitement, etc. on to their dogs. Whether this is done directly or indirectly, this is when the issues start to arise. We then see the dog developed insecurity, fear, anxiety, dominance or aggression issues themselves. That's where I come in and help people better understand who their dog is as an individual and how to communicate through a much more balanced way of being. I teach the importance of knowing when to be a calm-assertive leader and the proper time to share affection, play and joy. These points are immensely important when creating a balanced, heathy and strong bond with your dog. That's the way you'll gain their trust, respect and loyalty as well.

The easiest thing for people to do is "love" their dog(s) by sharing affection, treats, and toys yet none of these really fulfill who your dog is as an animal or as a canine. It is important we learn how to be in the moment with them (dogs), fulfilling their individual needs everyday and learning to let go and set aside our own personal needs and emotions when we are with them. That's the genuine definition of love for our dog(s) and how we show our dogs, in a language they can understand, that we truly love them.

Kianah Penn is Nick's partner and also works hands-on in the rehabilitation of the dogs in their care. Here is what Nick has to say about her: She is one of the most naturally gifted dog handlers I have ever seen even compared to many other professional dog trainers and behaviorist I've met. Even though just a year ago she had zero knowledge of how to work with dogs or lead a pack of dogs, today she is a strong pack leader. She learned so fast because of her openness and natural ability to gain a dog's trust and respect without using words or intellect but through pure feeling and sensing the dog's energy. Her unwavering calmness, fearlessness and when needed, assertiveness makes her an amazing person to have as a partner and one of the only people I have met so far with the natural ability to handle a large group of powerful dogs while keeping them calm and balanced.

Nick and Kianah also work tirelessly to find foster or forever homes for some of the special dogs that they have worked with. Adoption is such a beautiful gift for the animal and for the person. And fostering saves lives as well. Please consider these beauties if you're looking for an addition to your family.
